Biography
Soweto is a Brazilian pagode ensemble formed in 1991 in the Itaquera neighborhood of São Paulo. Originally named Sob Medida (after earlier incarnations such as Nó na Madeira), the group adopted its current name as a tribute to a Djavan song and a bar owned by Claudinho de Oliveira referencing the South African township of the same name. Their recording career began with the independent release of Vento Dos Areais (1995). After signing with EMI, they achieved national success with Refém Do Coração (1997), despite the tragic death of founder Robson Buiú shortly before its release. Lead singer Belo fronted the bandâs most commercially successful era, including the ABPD Diamond album Farol Das Estrelas (1999), which sold around 1.4 million copies. Following Beloâs 2000 departure for a solo career, the group continued with various vocalists and later released further works such as Fotografia (2000), before reuniting for a 30th-anniversary tour announced in 2023 and launched in 2024.
