Saul "Sonny" Berman, born on April 21, 1925, in New Haven, Connecticut, was an American jazz trumpeter. He began his professional music career at the age of 16, working with notable figures such as Georgie Auld, Louis Prima, and Tommy Dorsey. Berman's breakthrough came when he joined Woody Herman's First Herd in February 1945, where he remained until the band disbanded in late 1946. During this period, he was known for his innovative solos and versatile style. In January 1946, Berman participated in a jam session with Serge Chaloff, recording tracks such as "Ciretose" and "Down With Up". His contributions to jazz were cut short by his untimely death on January 16, 1947, in New York City. Despite his brief career, Berman's work was posthumously recognized through the release of the album Early Bebop Pioneer in December 2010.
