Biography

Solveig Slettahjell is a Norwegian jazz vocalist and composer born on 2 April 1971 in Bærum. She was raised in Orkanger and began singing in a choir at age seven before receiving formal piano and vocal training. In 1992, Slettahjell enrolled at the Norwegian Academy of Music to study jazz under Sidsel Endresen. She was a member of the band Squid and released the album Super (1998). Her professional breakthrough occurred with the album Slow Motion Orchestra (2001), which was recorded live at the Oslo jazz club Blaa. She formed the Slow Motion Quintet and released the studio albums Silver (2004) and Pixiedust (2005). Slettahjell won a Spellemannprisen in 2004 and received the Radka Toneff Memorial Award in 2005. Her later recordings include Good Rain (2006) and the collaboration Natt I Betlehem (2008) with Tord Gustavsen and Sjur Miljeteig. She received the Gammleng Prize in 2011 and released the album Trail of Souls (2015).
