Biography
Founded in Halifax (Nova Scotia), Canada in 1991, Sloan is a Canadian rock band formed by Chris Murphy (lead vocals/bass), Patrick Pentland (lead guitar), Jay Ferguson (rhythm guitar) and Andrew Scott (drums). Originally named The Deluxe Boys, the group changed their name and moved to Toronto, recording their first EP Peppermint in 1992, releasing it under their own label, Murderecords. Their debut studio album Smeared was released in January 1993 under Geffen Records, with its lead single âUnderwhelmedâ peaking at number 25 on Billboardâs Modern Rock Tracks chart. After Sloan began experimenting with a new musical style, Geffen refused to promote the bandâs second album Twice Removed (1994), however, despite this, the album attracted similar chart success and was certified gold. In 1995, the band broke up, releasing One Chord to Another purely to promote the Murderecords label. The album attracted considerable sales in Canada, winning the Juno Award for âBest Alternative Albumâ. In 1998, Sloan released their fourth album Navy Blues (also certified gold), followed by 4 Nights at the Palais Royal (live album) and Between the Bridges in 1999. Signing with BMG, the band released two albums Pretty Together (2001) and Action Pact (2003), which ranked number 11 in Canada. In 2006, the band broke into the US market with the thirty-track album Never Hear the End of It followed by Parallel Play in 2008. The bandâs 10th album The Double Cross was released in 2011, marking 20 years since their first show, followed by Commonwealth (2014), 12 (ranking number 11 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, 2018) and Steady (2022). In 2025, the band followed with their fourteenth studio album, Based on a Best Seller.
