Biography

Growing up in California and going to punk and hardcore gigs with his Mexican friends, Sonny Moore (born 15 January 1988 in Los Angeles) ran away at 15 years old after discovering he was adopted and ended up fronting US emo rockers From First to Last. A love of car park raves, Daft Punk and Warp Records' industrial dance beats led to him DJing under the name Twipz before working as a programmer for Canadian producer Deadmau5. Driven by a DIY, independent spirit and a fierce work ethic, he performed at over 300 shows in a year, creating big slices of crashing, screaming dubstep and electro on a laptop while on the road. Second EP Scary Monsters and Nice Spirits (2010) proved the big breakthrough, receiving over 62 million views on YouTube, introducing dubstep to the US mainstream and helping earn him a place on the BBC's Sound of 2012 shortlist. Sonny Moore remixed for Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Korn and collaborated with the remaining members of the Doors on a Miles Davis cover before he was crowned as a huge icon of the dancefloor with three Grammy Awards at the 2012 ceremony. Skrillex released his debut album Recess in 2014, which debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and number 13 in the UK, becoming his highest-charting release in both countries. He won a Grammy in 2015 with Diplo as Jack Ü and Justin Bieber for smash-hit "Where Are Ü Now" and spent the next few years notching up more collaborations from the 2016 track "Hate" with K-pop group 4Minute and "Purple Lamborghini" with Rick Ross to 2017 single "Would You Ever" with Poo Bear. He reunited with From First to Last in 2017, joining the band in Emo Nite LA for the first time in nearly a decade and won Crossover Collaboration of the Year at the Premio Lo Nuestro awards in 2022 for 2021's "In da Getto" with J. Balvin. In 2022, he was named Crossover Artist of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards and in February 2023 dropped his second album Quest for Fire, followed by his third album Don't Get Too Close just two days later during a sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden with Four Tet and Fred Again. In February 2024, Skrillex won his fourth Grammy Award for the single "Rumble", while the producer recorded F*ck U Skrillex You Think Ur Andy Warhol But Ur Not!! <3, a surprise album of 34 tracks released in April 2025 with a flood of guests such as Boys Noize, Virtual Riot, Dylan Brady, Whitearmor, Starrah, Zacari, Parisi, Fred Again, Ilykimichi, Don Toliver, Jónsi, Joker, among them. Later that year, he released the EP Hit Me When It Hurts x with Dylan Brady and Caroline Polachek.
