Biography

The eclectic Celtic rock band Skerrymore formed in Tiree, Argyll and Bute, Scotland in 2004 when brothers Martin Gillespie (pipes and whistles) and Daniel Gillespie (accordion) joined forces with Alec Dalglish (singer and guitarist) and Fraser West (drums). Taking their name from a nearby lighthouse, the band was steeped in traditional Celtic instrumentation. Their debut album, 2005’s West Coast Life consisted of primarily takes on traditional Scottish songs. They started to play bigger and better gigs which informed their 2007 album On the Road, which brought a rock influence to their sound as well as the inclusion of horns. Their eponymously titled 2010 album contained primarily original works, added keyboards to their sonic palette, and earned them an Album of the Year honors from the Scottish New Music Awards. Their sound matured again on 2012’s World of Chances, which consisted exclusively of original material written by the band and utilized varied influences as wide-ranging as cajun and country and jazz. They refocused on their Celtic roots for 2014’s Chasing the Sun, while not sacrificing their stylistic adventurism and were rewarded with their best charting album to that point. 2015’s Decade and 2018’s EVO continued their hot streak. They scored their first top 40 his in Scotland with the 2019 single “Soraidh Slàn & the Rise”, which hit number 13, and then bettered that with the charity single “Everyday Heroes”, which hit Number 1 in 2020. 2021 saw the release of “You and I”, followed by the first Number 1 album in Scottish chart, Tempus, in 2023. In 2025, Skerryvore released the single “The Sea That Things ”, and the anniversary album Skerryvore XX (Live at Floors Castle).
