Shayne P. Carter (born July 1964) is a New Zealand rock musician, singer, and songwriter from Dunedin. In 1978, Carter formed the group Bored Games, releasing the EP Who Killed Colonel Mustard in 1982. Following a tenure as a journalist, he formed DoubleHappys with Wayne Elsey in 1983. After Elseyâs death, Carter and John Collie founded Straitjacket Fits in 1986. The band released the EP Life in One Chord (1987) and the albums Hail (1988), Melt (1990), and Blow (1993) before disbanding in 1994. In 1995, Carter formed Dimmer, releasing the gold-certified album You've Got To Hear the Music (2004), which received Best Album and Best Group at the New Zealand Music Awards. Carter released the solo piano album Offsider in 2016. He was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and published the award-winning autobiography Dead People I Have Known in 2019.
