Biography

Ambros Seelos (1935–2015) was a German big band and jazz composer, arranger, and bandleader from Töging am Inn. After training as an installer, he studied classical clarinet at the Munich Conservatory. He began his career in 1956 playing rock 'n' roll before co-founding the Septett Jokers in 1958. By 1960, the group became the Ambros Seelos Orchester, touring Europe with Freddy Quinn and Chubby Checker. Seelos recorded the groove jazz album Fire (1968), featuring the song “Swingle Beat”. He collaborated with Sylvester Levay on the 1970 album I Left My Heart in Heidelberg and performed with Count Basie and Louie Bellson. After touring Asia in the 1970s and 1980s, he performed on cruise ships. Seelos ceased playing in 2011 following a serious elbow injury and died in Mühldorf am Inn on August 3, 2015.
