Biography

Syzygys, a Japanese organ-violin duo composed of Hitomi Shimizu on organ and Hiromi Nishida on violin, was formed in 1985. The group was known for playing microtonal pop music, specifically just intonation in the form of Harry Partch's 43-tone scale. Nishida studied Arabic-style violin with Abdo Dagir. Their debut album, Syzygys, was released in 1987. Subsequent releases include 43DPO (1990) and Eyes on Green: Syzygys Live at Roppongi Inkstick 1988 (2003). Their work has been recognized by notable figures such as György Ligeti, who mentioned their track "Fauna Grotesque" in a sketch. The duo released Otona in 2013.
