Biography

Born Shantanu Mukherjee on 30 September 1972 in Mumbai (then Bombay), Maharashtra, the Indian artist known professionally as Shaan has made a name for himself as a playback singer, composer, live performer, actor, and television personality. He grew up in a musical family – his grandfather was the famous lyricist Jahar Mukherjee, his father, Manas Mukherjee, a music director, and his sister, Sagarika, a singer – and after dipping his toes in music via a stint singing jingles for advertisements, he teamed up with Sagarika to record an album. He released a series of pop records with his sister in the late '90s, including 1996's Naujawan for the erstwhile Magnasound, before turning his attention to his solo career. In 2002, he won the MTV Asia Award for Favorite Artist India for best solo album for his LP Tanha Dil. He continued to put out successful albums and songs during the '00s, including 2006 collaboration with MLTR, "Take me to your heart," and contributed to numerous films along the way, eventually becoming one of Bollywood's most in-demand playback singers, regularly winning the Best Male Playback Award. In 2022, he recorded the song "Konjam Chellama" for the Indian sports drama film Clap as well as "Shallow" for the Indian Telugu-language coming-of-age romantic comedy film Stand Up Rahul.
