Sarah Makem, born on October 18, 1900, in Keady, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, was an Irish singer known for her extensive repertoire of traditional folk songs. She learned many of these songs from her mother and local schoolchildren, eventually amassing over five hundred ballads in memory. Makem gained recognition in the 1950s when song collectors recorded her performances. Her rendition of "As I Roved Out" opened the BBC Radio folk music programme of the same name. Makem released several albums, including Ulster Ballad Singer in 1968. Posthumously, her work was compiled into notable releases such as As I Roved Out and The Heart Is True (2012). Makem passed away on April 20, 1983.
