Sara Caswell, born February 21, 1978 in Bloomington, Indiana, is an American violinist who studied classical violin before developing an interest in jazz. She moved to New York City in the early 2000s and formed a jazz quartet.
Caswell's debut album First Song was released in 2000. In 2010, she began performing with Esperanza Spalding's Chamber Music Society, which won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2011. Her work on Roseanna Vitroâs album The Music of Randy Newman was nominated for a Grammy in 2012. Caswell was recognized as a Rising Star by Down Beat magazine and among the top jazz violinists by JazzTimes magazine. In 2013, she founded the ensemble 9 Horses with mandolinist Joseph Brent and bassist Shawn Conley, releasing their debut album Perfectest Herald on Sunnyside Records.
