Biography

Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1993, Samuel Mariño is a male soprano whose repertoire draws inspiration from the Baroque era. He is known both for his unique voice and his gender-bending image. When his voice didn’t change during puberty, his doctor suggested that he pursue singing as a career. He began studying singing and piano at the National Conservatory in Caracas, while also studying ballet at the National School of Dance. He became interested in works from the 17th and 18th centuries, especially material from composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi, Gluck, and others. While with the Camerata Barroca of Caracas, he developed a deeper interest in baroque singing, and he continued his studies at the National Conservatory of Paris. In order to expand his repertoire, he studied under American soprano Barbara Bonney. Samuel Mariño was the recipient of a scholarship from the Rotary Club of Salzburg, Austria. After several competitions – he won the Marseille Opera International Competition and received the public prize at the Neue Stimmen Competition in Gütersloh, Germany – he founded the Teseo ensemble, which was devoted to rediscovering singing techniques and introducing a Baroque repertoire to a wider audience. In 2020, he released the album, Care Pupille, which focused on music composed by Handel and Gluck. Revealing himself to be homosexual, he posed in a ceremonial outfit on the cover of his 2022 album Sopranista, which caused mild controversy when it was released. However, the album’s collection of arias composed by Mozart, Gluck, Boulogne, and Cimarosa was a critical and commercial success and reached number 41 on the Classical Albums chart.
