Biography
Belgian countertenor, tenor and conductor Reinoud Van Mechelen was born in Leuven on May 29, 1987. He began singing as a child in a choir, then took lessons with Anne Mertens and Nicolas Achten before joining the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 2007, where his teachers included Lena Lootens and Dina Grossberger, in addition to master classes with Jean-Paul Fauchécourt, Howard Cook and Claire Lefilliâtre, among others. Destined for a career in Baroque opera, he made his debut at the Académie d'Ambronnay in Destouches' Le Carnaval et la folie, conducted by Hervé Niquet, and has been invited by ensembles such as L'Arpeggiata, Pygmalion, Les Talens Lyriques, B'Rock, the Ricercar Consort and Il Gardellino. A regular contributor to N. Achten's Scherzi Musicali, he has taken part in several acclaimed recordings. From 2011 onwards, his schedule is filled between stage and studio, collaborating with Le Poème Harmonique and Les Arts Florissants, before creating his own ensemble, A Nocte Temporis, in 2015. Signed by the Alpha Classics label, he recorded a first recital devoted to Bach, Erbame dich (2016), followed by thematic albums often awarded a Diapason d'or: Clérambault: Cantates Françaises (2018), Dumesny: Haute-Contre de Lully (2019), Jéliote: Haute-Contre de Rameau (2021), Oh, Ma Belle Brunette (2022) and Legros: Haute-Contre de Gluck (2023). He conducts Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre's opera Céphale et Procris (2024) and takes part in the successful productions Les Boréades by Rameau conducted by György Vashegyi and Matthäus-Passion by Bach with Raphaël Pichon, before changing register and debuting in the classical period with Mozart: Concert Arias (2025).
