Biography

Sam Prekop, born October 18, 1964, in London, is an American musician and singer. He grew up in Chicago and studied at the Kansas City Art Institute. Prekop's music career began with the formation of Shrimp Boat in 1988, which was active until 1993. Following the disbandment of Shrimp Boat, he co-founded The Sea and Cake with Eric Claridge, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire. In 1999, Prekop released his self-titled debut solo album Sam Prekop, produced by Jim O'Rourke. This album featured contributions from Josh Abrams, Chad Taylor, and Archer Prewitt. His subsequent albums include Who's Your New Professor (2005), Old Punch Card (2010), Pavilion (soundtrack, 2013), The Republic (2015), and Comma (2020). In 2022, he collaborated with John McEntire on the album Sons Of, before releasing The Sparrow on his own that year. Prekop's work often incorporates elements of Brazilian pop and modular synthesizer. In 2025, he followed with Open Close.
