Born Stephen McRobbie in Glasgow, Scotland, Stephen Pastel is a musician and songwriter, best known as co-founder, guitarist and singer of the band The Pastels, formed in 1981. A central figure in the UK DIY indie and C86 scenes, he has helped shape a lo-fi, melodic approach to pop and rock, favoring intimacy, simplicity and independence over commercial success. Beyond The Pastels' rich discography, Stephen Pastel has been heavily involved in promoting underground music, notably through his work with labels such as 53rd & 3rd in the 1980s, then Geographic Music, where he released experimental projects and collaborations. He is also co-owner of Monorail Music in Glasgow, one of the UK's best-known independent record shops. In 2024, he teamed up with long-time collaborator Gavin Thompson to record the soundtrack This Is Memorial Device, for the show staged after David Keenan's novel of the same name.
