Biography

Russ Lossing, born in 1960, in Ohio, is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and improviser. He began classical piano lessons at age five and started studying jazz at 13 under Dave Wheeler at the Jazz and Contemporary Workshop. In 1986, he earned a Bachelor of Music from Ohio State University and moved to New York City, where he became part of the local jazz scene. Lossing has led or co-led numerous bands, including his own trio with Masa Kamaguchi and Billy Mintz, and collaborations with notable musicians such as Paul Motian, Tim Berne, and Gerry Hemingway. Lossing's compositions often blended modern classical influences with jazz improvisation, as highlighted in his solo piano tribute album to Paul Motian, Drum Music (2012). He also released several albums, including As It Grows (2004), All Things Arise (2006), and Motian Music (2019). Lossing founded the record label Aqua Piazza in 2015.
