Biography

Ruby Wright (born October 27, 1939, United States) was an American country music singer‑songwriter who emerged from a musical family, the daughter of Kitty Wells and Johnnie Wright. She began performing with her parents as a child and, at thirteen, signed with RCA Records under the name Ruby Wells to avoid confusion with another pop singer of the same name. In the mid‑1950s she joined the all‑girl trio Nita, Rita and Ruby, featuring Anita Carter, and worked with Chet Atkins; the trio achieved modest recording success before disbanding due to stage‑fright issues. Wright then formed The Wright Sisters with her sister Carol Sue, securing a contract with Cadence Records under Atkins’ guidance, and recorded as Ruby Wells with her father and uncle. Her breakthrough single came in 1964 with "Dern Ya", an answer to Roger Miller’s "Dang Me", which became her most successful chart entry. In 1966 she signed with Epic Records and later recorded for Plantation and Scorpion Records throughout the 1970s. Wright’s discography includes the album Dern Ya (1966) and the single "Three Stars" (2010), the latter released posthumously. She passed away from a heart‑related illness on September 27, 2009, at age 69.
