Biography

Ronald Kenneth Westray Jr. was born on June 13, 1970, in Columbia, South Carolina, and is an American jazz trombonist, composer, and educator. He earned a B.A. from South Carolina State University and a Master of Arts degree from Eastern Illinois University. Westray began his professional career playing with notable figures and ensembles such as Marcus Roberts and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He also became a regular member of the Mingus Big Band. In 2005, Westray joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and in 2009, he was appointed to the Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance at York University. Westray's discography includes Westray Digs In (2002), Medical Cures for the Chromatic Commands of the Inner City (2008), Ron Westray/Thomas Heflin Live from Austin (2011), and Jimi Jazz (2014). As a sideman, Westray collaborated with Wycliffe Gordon on the album Bone Structure (1996).
