Biography
Roman Schwaller, born on January 18, 1957, in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, is a Swiss jazz saxophonist, orchestra leader, and composer. He trained classically at Winterthur Conservatory and studied jazz at the Swiss Jazz School Bern under Heinz Bigler and Andy Scherrer. Schwaller's career began with live radio productions and concerts in Germany during the late 1970s, collaborating with artists like Dusko Goykovich and Klaus Weiss. In 1979, he released his first album, Childâs Prayer, with the Klaus Weiss Quintet featuring Mal Waldron. Schwaller was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 1979 to 1989, touring worldwide, and formed his own quartet in 1983. He also played extensively with artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Carla Bley. Schwaller received the Cultural Promotion Prize of Munich in 1985 and the Culture Prize of the Canton of Thurgau in 1990. In 2008, he became a professor at the Vienna Conservatory.
