Biography

Rochell & The Candles were a male vocal group from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1958, the original line-up included Rochell Henderson on lead and tenor vocals, Johnny Wyatt on lead and first tenor, Melvin Sasso on tenor, and T.C. Henderson on bass. Rochell Henderson had previously been a member of The Chosen Gospel Singers, which included Lou Rawls. The group's breakthrough came in 1961 with the release of "Once Upon A Time", which peaked at number 20 on the R&B charts and number 26 on the pop charts. This song spent a total of thirteen weeks on the pop charts. In July 1962, they released another single, "Each Night" b/w "Turn Her Down", composed by Willie Morris and K.C. Reeth and Robt. J. Hafner, respectively. Their hit appears on the 16 All Time Great Rare Original Oldies various artists compilation issued on Del-Fi Records. Between 1966 and 1967, Johnny Wyatt released several solo singles on the Bronco label. Johnny Wyatt passed away in 1983.
