Biography

Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians were an English alternative/psychedelic rock band active mainly from 1984 to 1994. The band formed when Hitchcock reunited with former members of The Soft Boys, Andy Metcalfe (bass, keyboards, vocals) and Morris Windsor (drums) - later joined by keyboardist Roger Jackson - to flesh out his surreal lyrical vision, imbued with neo-psychedelic jangle pop. They released the studio albums Fegmania! (1985) and Element of Light (1986) on independent labels - Midnight Music and Glass Fish - before signing with A&M Records for the follow-ups: Globe of Frogs (1988), Queen Elvis (1989), Perspex Island (1991) and Respect (1993), no less critically acclaimed. The band also released two live albums, Gotta Let This Hen Out! (1985) and Live at the Cambridge Folk Festival (1998). Several compilations were released after the split, including The Kershaw Sessions (1994), Greatest Hits (1996), Bad Case of History (2008) and Luminous Groove (2008), the last two on the Yep Roc label. Robyn Hitchcock went on to pursue a solo career, playing and recording with the band Venus 3, remaining a prolific songwriter in the psychedelic register.
