Biography

Richard Douglas Trowbridge Souther was born on 25 June 1951 in Los Angeles, California, and later resided in Las Vegas, Nevada. A composer, arranger, keyboardist and pianist, he began his career in the mid‑1970s as a member of A Band Called David, providing backing for the vocal group 2nd Chapter of Acts and contributing to recordings by Barry McGuire, Phil Keaggy, Annie Herring and Jamie Owens‑Collins. In the mid‑1980s he released four instrumental albums on Meadowlark Records: Heirborne (1985), InnerMission (1986), Songs Unspoken (1985) and Second Story (1987), the latter two issued under his middle name Douglas Trowbridge. After signing with Narada Equinox, he issued Cross Currents (1989) and Twelve Tribes (1990); the former peaked at number 9 on Billboard’s Top New Age Albums chart. He produced and arranged Twila Paris’s Sanctuary (1991), which earned a 1992 Dove Award for Best Praise and Worship Album. In 1994 he released Vision: The Music of Hildegard von Bingen on Angel Records, topping Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart, followed by Illumination: Hildegard von Bingen – The Fire of the Spirit (1997) which reached number 14 on the same chart. Since 2002, Souther has issued a series of releases on NortherSouth Music, none of which entered Billboard charts.
