Biography

Nicholas Angelich – born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 14, 1970 – was an acclaimed pianist born in the US but relocated to France in his early teens. The son of Yugoslavian violinist Borivoje Andjelitch and Russian pianist Clara Kadarjan, Nicholas Angelich began studying the piano at the age of five. At the age of seven, he made his live public debut performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. He moved to Paris, France to study at the Conservatoire National Superieur. He took second prize at the Casadesus International Piano Competition in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1994, he took first prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. A year later, he made his New York recital debut at the Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan. He continued to perform with highly respected orchestra at major venues. He released his first album, Rachmaninov: Etudes – Tableaux, in 1995. However, he is best known for his interpretations of works by his favorite composer, Johannes Brahms, including Piano Trios (2004), Violin Sonatas 1 – 3 (2005), Klavierstücke Op.116-119 (2007), and Piano Concertos 1 & 2 (2014). His critically acclaimed recording of Bach: Goldberg Variations (2011) proved that he was a worthy heir to his Paris National Conservatory teachers Aldo Ciccolini, Yvonne Loriod, and Michel Béroff. Nicholas Angelich died from degenerative lung failure on April 18, 2022, at the age of 51.
