Biography
Jazz, blues and pop composer, pianist and performer Rebekka Bakken was born in Oslo, Norway on April 4, 1970. With a three octave range, Rebekka Bakken is referred to as a jazz artist, but her mixture of folk, blues, jazz, and pop make her hard to classify. She studied violin and piano as a child and played in rock and soul groups in high school, before moving to New York in 1995 to pursue a career as a professional musician. She met Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel and began to perform and with him, eventually recording three albums together: Daily Mirror (2000), Daily Mirror Reflected (2001), and Beloved (2002). She recorded the album Steinhaus (2003) with Tunisian oud player Dhafer Youssef. Rebekka Bakken then collaborated with the Julia Hülsmann Trio on the album Scattering Poems (2005). Back in Europe, Rebekka Bakken developed a unique style that blended jazz, blues and pop-rock, releasing the albums The Art of How to Fall (2003), Is That You? (2005), I Keep My Cool (2006), Morning Hours (2009) and September (2012), which featured musical assistance from Eivind Aarset, Lars Danielsson, Marc Ribot, Patrick Warren and Gail Ann Dorsey. In 2014, she released the album Little Drop of Poison, a collection of Tom Waits compositions. Rebekka Bakken turned to fellow Norwegian musicians for the albums Things You Leave Behind (2018) and Winter Nights (2020).
