Katie Melua, the successful Georgian/British singer, songwriter and musician renowned for her mix of jazz vocals with a modern pop twist, made her musical debut in 2003, and under the management of songwriter Mike Batt matured into Europe's best-selling female artist by 2006. Her first album Call off the Search achieved the top-spot in the UK's album chart, and within five months had achieved 1.8 million sales. The single from that album, Closest Thing To Crazy, hit Number 5 in the UK singles chart in the same year, and in 2004 the album went platinum. Building on these early successes, Melua embarked on a number of tours in Europe and the US, culminating with the release of her second album Piece by Piece in 2005. Another Number 1 album chart followed and the song Nine Million Bicycles became her first UK Number 1 single whilst the album itself went platinum four times. Melua released the album Pictures in 2007, her third and reportedly last collaboration with Batt.
