Rebecca Sugar, born on July 9, 1987, in Silver Spring, Maryland, is an American animator and screenwriter. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in animation in 2009. Sugar began her television career as a storyboard artist on Cartoon Networkâs Adventure Time. In 2013, she created Steven Universe, becoming the first non-binary person to independently create a series for Cartoon Network. The show earned her seven Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She also directed the full-length television movie Steven Universe: The Movie in 2019 and produced its epilogue limited series Steven Universe Future. Sugar's musical contributions include the album Steven Universe Future, released on October 23, 2020, and the single "Hill to Die On" from August 15, 2025. She also recorded two personal albums, Spiral Bound (2023) and Lonely Magic (2025).
