Biography

Formed in Caracas in 2007, Venezuelan reggae band Rawayana's influences span way beyond the genre, incorporating elements from funk, ska, alternative rock, and beyond. Consisting of "Beto" Montenegro (vocals/guitar), Antonio Casas (bass), Andrés "Fofo" Story (drums), Alejandro "Abeja" Abeijón (guitar), and Eddie Cisneros (keyboards), the band began performing in various venues in Caracas in 2009. The following year, they were selected to perform at the Festival Nuevas Bandas 2010, sharing the stage with major artists like Viniloversus and La Vida Bohème. In 2011, Rawayana released their studio debut, Licencia Para Ser Libre. Promoted by brands like Quiksilver and Peer Music, the album featured hits like "Fuego Azul" and "Algo Distinto," which earned them several awards at the Pepsi Awards of Venezuela. Their follow-up album in 2013, Rawayanaland, featured collaborations with notable artists such as Los Amigos Invisibles' José Luis "DJ Afro" Pardo ("No Significa") and Natalia Lafourcade ("Mamita"). 2016 marked a pivotal point in their career with the release of their third full-length album, Trippy Caribbean. Driven by the song "High" with Apache, which accumulated over 94 million views on video-streaming platforms, Trippy Caribbean expanded the group's footprint, with tours across North America and Europe in 2017. Over the following years, Rawayana began teasing their fourth LP with the singles "Mi Amigo Luis," "Camarones y Viniles," and "Welcome To El Sur," followed by the announcement of the album's title, Cuando los Acéfalos Predominan. Finally released in February 2021, the album featured collaborations with Los Amigos Invisibles and Akapellah, among others.
