Biography

Philip Aaberg was born on April 8, 1949 in Havre, Montana, and began playing piano, expanding into accordion and composition. He launched his recording career in the mid‑1980s, issuing High Plains in 1985, followed by Meridian (A Journey of Spring) in 1989 and Upright the same year. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s he released Cinema (1992), Field Notes (2000), Live from Montana (2001), and Blue West (2005), each showcasing his blend of jazz improvisation with folk textures. The 2010s saw High Plains Christmas (2013), Tuli Wamu with Kinobe (2012) and Versatile (2017), adding holiday and experimental layers. Philip Aaberg toured extensively across North America, collaborating with regional jazz ensembles. He passed away in Minneapolis on May 23, 2026, leaving a catalog that continues to influence contemporary jazz pianists.
