Biography

José Sánchez Gómez, known professionally as Pepe de Lucía, was born in 1945 in Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain. He began his career as a flamenco singer alongside his brother, guitarist Paco de Lucía, forming the duo Los Chiquitos de Algeciras, which won the Special Jury Prize at the International Flamenco Contest in Jerez de la Frontera in 1962. Pepe de Lucía continued to collaborate with his brother and worked with notable figures such as dancer José Greco and wrote lyrics for artists like Camarón de la Isla. He produced albums for various flamenco artists, including Capullo de Jerez and La Macanita. Notable releases include El orgullo de mi padre (1996) and Los hijos de Luzía (1999). Pepe de Lucía received the Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album in 2003 for El corazón de mi gente.
