Biography

Paul Dobson Nyirongo (January 10, 1949), known as Paul Ngozi, was a Zambian Zamrock, kalindula, and proto-punk musician and bandleader from Lusaka. Ngozi formed The Scorpions and joined Musi-O-Tunya in 1975 before founding the Ngozi Family. He released the debut album Day of Judgement (1976) and established a reputation as a social commentator. Ngozi released the albums In the Ghetto (1977) and Heavy = Metal (1977) and toured Europe, the United States, and South Africa. He performed by playing the guitar with his teeth. His music appeared posthumously in media; the song “Hold On” from the album 45,000 Volts (1977) featured in the series Poker Face (2023). In 2024, Tyler, the Creator sampled the song “Nizakupanga Ngozi” on the track “Noid”. Ngozi died on November 7, 1989.
