Nicoletta Strambelli, known professionally as Patty Pravo, was born on 9â¯Aprilâ¯1948 in Venice, Veneto, and emerged as an Italian singer, songwriter and pianist. After early piano, dance and solfège lessons and enrollment at the Benedetto Marcello Music Conservatory, she moved to Rome at seventeen where she began performing at the Piper Club, earning the nickname âla ragazza del Piper.â Her first single, "Ragazzo triste" (1966), introduced her to the Italian market and led to a contract with RCA Italiana. Patty Pravoâs breakthrough arrived with the 1968 single "La bambola", which topped the Italian charts for nine consecutive weeks and sold a million copies, cementing her status as a pop star. The success was followed by a series of albums-Patty Pravo (1968), Concerto per Patty (1969) and Patty Pravo (1970)-and notable singles such as "Sentimento" and "Per te". In 1973 she released Pazza Idea, whose title track dominated the charts for two months and sold over 1.5â¯million copies; the album reached number one in Italy. Subsequent releases Mai una signora (1974) and Incontro (1975) continued her commercial momentum, while collaborations with Vangelis on Tanto (1976) introduced experimental elements. The late 1970s saw a stylistic shift with Miss Italia (1978), featuring the hit "Pensiero stupendo", and the Munich-produced Munich Album (1979), which blended electronic and rock sounds. A move to the United States in the early 1980s yielded the newâwave LP Cerchi (1982) and the single "Per una bambola" (1984), which earned a criticsâ award at Sanremo. Despite a decline in the 1980s, she revived her career in the 1990s with Notti, guai e libertà (1998), produced with Ivano Fossati, Franco Battiato and Lucio Dalla, and the acclaimed live release Bye Bye Patty (1997). Her 2000s output included Una donna da sognare (2000) and NicâUnic (2004), the latter showcasing an avantâgarde approach.Patty Pravo maintained a strong festival presence, participating eleven times at Sanremo Music Festival, with notable entries "...E dimmi che non vuoi morire" (1997) and "Cieli immensi" (2016), the latter earning a criticsâ award.
