Biography

Papa Grows Funk is an American funk band from New Orleans, Louisiana. The group was formed in early 2000 by frontman John "Papa" Gros during Monday night jam sessions at New Orleans’ Maple Leaf Bar. These sessions evolved into a regular gathering for musicians including guitarist June Yamagishi, sax player Jason Mingledorf, bassist Marc Pero, and drummer Jeffery "Jellybean" Alexander. The band's debut album Doin It was released in 2001, followed by Shakin' in 2003. They gained local attention with their live performances, including an appearance at The Voodoo Experience held at City Park in New Orleans over Halloween weekend 2009. Their subsequent albums include Live at the Leaf (2006), Mr. Patterson's Hat (2007), and Needle in the Groove (2012). The band went on an indefinite hiatus in June 29, 2013.
