The Panics, formed in Perth, Western Australia in 2000, consisted of Jae Laffer (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Drew Wootton (guitar), Myles Wootton (drums), Paul Otway (bass), and Jules Douglas (keyboard, guitar, vocals). The band released a selfâtitled EP in January 2002, with tracks such as "My Brilliant Career" receiving significant rotation on Tripleâ¯J, followed by a second EP in July 2002 that included "This Day Last Year". Their debut album, A House on a Street in a Town I'm From, appeared in Augustâ¯2003 on LittleBIGMAN Records and included the single "Kid You're a Dreamer", later used as the theme for the television drama The Surgeon. After a second album, Sleeps Like a Curse (Augustâ¯2005), the group signed with Dew Process in Februaryâ¯2007 and released Cruel Guards (13â¯Octoberâ¯2007), which peaked at number 18 on the ARIA Charts, achieved gold certification, and earned the 2007 J Award for Tripleâ¯J Australian Album of the Year. The single "Don't Fight It" reached number 43 on the ARIA singles chart and was featured in Underbelly and Ugly Betty. Subsequent releases included Rain on the Humming Wire (29â¯Julyâ¯2011), which peaked at number 7 on the ARIA Charts, and Hole in Your Pocket (7â¯Octoberâ¯2016), which reached number 52. The Panics received the ARIA Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album in 2008 and were nominated for multiple other national and regional accolades.
