Legendary salsa singer and musician Oscar D'León was born Oscar Emilio León Simosa on July 11, 1943 in Caracas, Venezuela. D'León is one of salsa musicâs biggest stars and is often referred to as âThe Pharoah of Salsaâ, âThe Lion of Salsaâ, and âThe Devil of Salsaâ. D'León was influenced by Cuban musicians like Beny Moré and the New York Latin sceneâs main players like Eddie Palmieri and Willie Colón. Although he is more widely-known as a vocalist, he is also a self-taught bassist. He normally records and tours with large bands that feature 15 players and sometimes more. He has an award-winning back catalog of albums with his bands La Dimension Latina and La Salsa Mayor as well as many solo releases. Some of those albums â released over a span of nearly 50 years - include Dimension Latina â75 (1974) Con Bajo Y Todo (1976), Tranquilo Y Son Miedo (1978), El Sabor De Oscar (1983), En Puerto Rico (1990), Doble Play (with Wladimir Lozano/2000), Fuzionando (2006) and Big Band Classics/Clasicos De Big Band (2014). His best-known songs include âPensando en Tiâ, "Llorarás", and âA Elâ.
