Biography

Legendary salsa singer and musician Oscar D'León was born Oscar Emilio León Simosa on July 11, 1943 in Caracas, Venezuela. D'León is one of salsa music’s biggest stars and is often referred to as ‘The Pharoah of Salsa’, ‘The Lion of Salsa’, and ‘The Devil of Salsa’. D'León was influenced by Cuban musicians like Beny Moré and the New York Latin scene’s main players like Eddie Palmieri and Willie Colón. Although he is more widely-known as a vocalist, he is also a self-taught bassist. He normally records and tours with large bands that feature 15 players and sometimes more. He has an award-winning back catalog of albums with his bands La Dimension Latina and La Salsa Mayor as well as many solo releases. Some of those albums – released over a span of nearly 50 years - include Dimension Latina ’75 (1974) Con Bajo Y Todo (1976), Tranquilo Y Son Miedo (1978), El Sabor De Oscar (1983), En Puerto Rico (1990), Doble Play (with Wladimir Lozano/2000), Fuzionando (2006) and Big Band Classics/Clasicos De Big Band (2014). His best-known songs include “Pensando en Ti”, "Llorarás", and “A El”.
