Biography

Ömer Faruk Tekbilek, born in 1951 in Adana, Turkey, is a flutist known for his virtuosity with the ney. He began playing the kaval at age twelve and performed professionally in local clubs. Influenced by Sufism, he moved to Istanbul to study music and later to New York City in 1976, forming The Sultans. His breakthrough came in 1988 with the soundtrack Suleyman The Magnificent (1988), leading to albums like Fire Dance (1990) and Beyond The Sky (1992). Tekbilek collaborated with notable musicians such as Simon Shaheen and Ara Dinkjian, earning a reputation for fusing traditional Middle Eastern music with modern elements. Other notable albums include Alif (2002) and Tree of Patience (2005).
