O'Bryan McCoy Burnette II, known professionally as O'Bryan, was born on December 5, 1961, in the United States. He began playing the piano at age six and started singing in his local church and talent shows. In 1974, O'Bryan moved to Santa Ana, California, where he joined the Second Baptist Church young adult choir. His friend Melanee Kersey introduced him to her husband, producer Ron Kersey, who helped him sign with Capitol Records in 1982. O'Bryan released his debut album Doin' Alright in April 1982, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. The lead single "The Gigolo" reached number 5 on the Billboard R&B Singles charts. His sophomore effort You and I, released in March 1983, included the hit single "Iâm Freaky", which peaked at number 15. In May 1984, O'Bryan released Be My Lover, his highest-charting album at number 3, featuring the top R&B single "Lovelite". His final album with Capitol Records, Surrender, was released in 1986 and included notable ballads such as "You Have Got to Come to Me" and "Maria". After leaving Capitol Records, O'Bryan signed with A&M Records but later moved to Atlantic Records' label Third Stone Records. Due to management changes, he exited the recording industry quietly. In 2007, O'Bryan made a comeback with the album F1RST, marking his first release in two decades and featuring ballads like "Just Like Doinâ It" and "Can I Kiss Your Lips".
