Biography
Lakeside, an American funk band hailing from Dayton, Ohio, was formed in 1969 by guitarist Stephen Shockley. The group evolved through various iterations before solidifying as Lakeside and eventually signing with Solar Records. Their debut album for the label, Shot of Love, released in 1978, featured the single "It's All the Way Live", which reached number four on the R&B charts. In 1980, Lakeside achieved significant success with their third studio release, Fantastic Voyage. The title track, "Fantastic Voyage" climbed to Number 1 on the R&B chart and peaked at Number 55 on the pop charts. This album was certified Gold and later Platinum. Notable follow-up hits include a remake of the Beatles' song "I Want to Hold Your Hand", as well as tracks like "Raid" (1983) and "Outrageous" (1984). The band continued to release albums until 1987, with "Bullseye" being their final major hit. Throughout their career, Lakeside was known for its dynamic lineup and costuming choices on album covers. Members of the group included Marvin Craig (bass), Fred Alexander Jr. (drums) and Stephen Shockley (guitar). Lakesideâs music has been featured in various compilations post-breakup. In 2019, the band performed at a benefit concert at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights raising more than $109,000 for tornado survivors.
