Biography

The Novi Singers – aka NOVI (New Original Vocal Instruments) – was a jazz vocal group formed in Warsaw, Poland in 1964. Led by Bernard Kawka, the group’s members were students at the State Higher School of Music. The Novi Singers used a technique referred to as instrumental singing in which the human voice would mimic musical instruments. Originally a quintet, the Novi Singers made their live debut at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw on May 2, 1965, and released their first EP, Christine, in October of that year. They began playing international jazz festivals and gaining recognition around the world. By the time they released their 1967 debut album, Bossa Nova, the Novi Singers were down to a quartet. Further albums in their catalog include Novi in Wonderland (1968), Torpedo (1970), Novi Sings Chopin (1971), Rien Ne Va Plus (1973), the Bernard Kawka-less Five, Four, Three (1974), and Pay Tribute (1980). The band went through line-up changes and finally split in 1985. They reunited for a one-time performance at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 2001.
