Biography

Formed in Amsterdam in 1974, the Nits band has been at the forefront of sophisticated pop for five decades. With a core group of musicians consisting of Henk Hofstaede (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Robert Jan Stips (keyboards, vocals), Alex Roelofs (bass) and Rob Kloet (drums), one of the international critics' favorite bands has forged a highly artistic style, blending literary references, chiseled melodies and elaborate arrangements, resulting in a typically European atmosphere, alternating acoustic sounds with subtle electronic touches. Right from the start, Nits built up a loyal following with albums such as Tent (1979), New Flat (1980) and Work (1981), before gaining a cult following during the new wave period with Omsk (1983) and its hit "Nescio", followed by Adieu, Sweet Banhof (1984) and In the Dutch Mountains (1987), with its equally popular title track. In 1989, Urk, a double album recorded live in a church, was released. Nits has continued in his intimate vein without his music taking on a single wrinkle, renewing his inspiration, notably on Ting (1992), Les Nuits (2005), Malpensa (2012), Angst (2017) and Neon (2022).
