Biography

Born in Birkhadem, Algiers, in 1973, Algerian singer Neïla Benbey began her artistic career in Barcelona, Spain, in 1994. She learned to sing, took up acting and musical comedy, evolved in jazz atmospheres, and then began performing on stage in 2005. With a show based on The Thousand and One Nights, Neïla Benbey toured Spain and Italy, before deciding to form a music group on her return. In 2010, she unveiled Algerian Soul, an introspective journey into her native Algeria, where traditional rhythms blend with the sounds of her adopted Catalonia. Sometimes sung in French ("Le cœur serré"), sometimes more instrumental ("Saharaui"), this album is an opportunity for her to introduce her Spanish fans to Algerian culture, which is little-known in their country. While she uses music to tell a personal story, Neïla Benbey then returns to the stage to perform in other formats, as she did in 2012 at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, focusing on flamenco and oriental cultures.
