Biography

Jazz and fusion pianist and arranger Naoya Matsuoka was born on May 9, 1937, in Honmoku, Yokohama, Japan. He began his career leading his own trio in 1954 but played in various formations over the next few decades. While he played traditional jazz early in his career, he began to incorporate Latin jazz, funk, and fusion into his performances. He formed the band Naoya Matsuoka and His All Stars, releasing the Latin influenced albums Joyful Feet (1977) and Day Break (1979). Naoya Matsuoka then joined forces with Wesing and released a series of world fusion albums including Majorca (1979), Son (1980), Danzon (1981), and The Show (1981). He continued to pursue world fusion on a series of solo albums such as Pacific Jam (1981), The September Wind (1982), Fall on the Avenue (1982), Long for the East (1984), Searching for Venus (1994), The Earth Beams (1999), and Sincerely (2005). In total, he released over 40 studio, live, and compilation albums. In the 1980s, he also composed music for anime TV series and films. Naoya Matsuoka died on April 29, 2014.
