Biography

Morten Gunnar Larsen is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer who was born in 1955 in Oslo. He is famous for several ragtime and stride piano recordings. Larsen studied classical piano at Norges Musikkhøgskole and released the debut record Classic Rags and Stomps (1975), which won the Spellemannprisen in 1976. He founded the Ophelia Ragtime Orchestra in 1977 and collaborated with the stride pianist Eubie Blake. Larsen performed in New Orleans over long periods, appearing in the production One mo' time (1979–81). His work Jelly Roll!! – The Music and the Man was performed at the Oslo Jazzfestival in 1990 and later completed an 11-month run Off-Broadway (1994–95), which earned him an OBIE Award in 1995. Notable albums include Echo of Spring (1983), Maple Leaf Rag (1989), Fingerbreaker (1999), Ernesto Nazareth: Creole Connections (2014), and Sorgenfri (2015).
