Biography

Arthur “Montana” Taylor was an American boogie-woogie and piano blues pianist born in 1903, likely in Butte or Indianapolis. He established a musical background in Indianapolis before relocating to Chicago. In 1929, Taylor recorded the songs “Whoop and Holler Stomp”, “Hayride Stomp”, “Indiana Avenue Stomp”, and “Detroit Rocks” for Vocalion Records. He specialized in the barrelhouse style of playing. Following a period of inactivity, Taylor returned to recording in 1946 after being located by Rudi Blesh. The recording career featured solo tracks and collaborations as an accompanist for Bertha “Chippie” Hill. Taylor’s final professional activity included a 1946 radio broadcast, after which he worked as a chauffeur. He lived in Cleveland from 1957 and died approximately in 1958. Posthumous releases included the compilation albums Montana's Blues (1977) and Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order 1929–1946 (2002).
