MONORAL was formed in 1999 in Japan by vocalist and guitarist Anis Shimada and bassist Ali Morizumi. Anis Shimada, born 23 February 1975 in London, and Ali Morizumi, born 1975 in Tokyo, met while Anis Shimada was a radio host on MTV Japan; their shared interest in alternative rock led to the duoâs collaboration. The groupâs first release, the miniâalbum In Stereo (25 July 2001), debuted at the FujiRock Festival and featured the track "Good Bye", which entered the top positions on InterFM. In 2004 the miniâalbum Ammonite reached number three on Tower Recordsâ indie chart and remained in the Topâ¯50 for seven months. Their debut fullâlength album, Petrol (13 July 2005), was followed by the single "Visions in My Head" (2 November 2005). The 2006 single "Kiri" served as the opening for the anime Ergo Proxy, expanding their international profile. Subsequent albums Turbulence (4 July 2007) and Via (29 October 2008) were supported by extensive tours, including the Magical Turbulence Tour 2007, Monoral Circus Tour 2008, and a Latin American leg of the Via LatinAmerica Tour 2008. Throughout their career, MONORAL maintained a partnership with VAMPROSE and later Haunted Records, consistently producing Englishâlanguage rock music that charted within Japanâs indie scene and earned recognition for their contributions to anime soundtracks.
