Monomono, an afro-rock band formed in Lagos, Nigeria in 1971, was composed of vocalist Joni Haastrup, bassist Babá Ken Okulolo, guitarist Danjuma "Jimi Lee" Adamu, Friday Jumbo and Candido Obajimi. Shortly after forming, Monomono released their first single with "A Dele" on side A and an instrumental "Kenimania" on side B. In 1973, they issued their debut album Give the Beggar a Chance, which was also released in Zambia and Peru that same year. The following year, Monomono released their final vinyl album The Dawn of Awareness. The band's sound became popular among Nigeria's middle class youth. Monomono split apart in 1975 or 1976. In 2011, Soundway Records reissued the first two MonoMono records: 1972's Give the Beggar a Chance and 1974's The Dawn of Awareness. Haastrup passed away on September 3, 2024.
