Bola Johnson was a Nigerian musician and bandleader born on July 6, 1947, in Lagos. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by highlife and for his storytelling in Pidgin English. Johnson achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he stopped his secondary education in 1963 and performed as a member of the highlife band of the musician Eric Akaeze. He achieved professional recognition for learning the trumpet and forming his own ensemble Bola Johnson and his Easy Life Top Beats in 1968. His recording career included the single âAsewo Ajegunle Yakareâ released on the label Philips Records. Johnson achieved professional recognition for appearing on the comedy program Hello Fans as the character Papa Rebecca and using the trademark âI Go Die O!â on the stage. He achieved professional recognition for serving as a DJ for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and writing columns titled âWakaboutâ for the newspaper Lagos Weekend. Johnson died on April 6, 2014.
