Biography

Born on December 26, 1989 in Amami Ōshima, Kagoshima – the largest island in the Amami archipelago – Japanese island folk balladeer Minami Kizuki learned the piano as a small child and began laying the foundations for her music career as a teenager. After moving to the mainland for high school, the gossamer-voiced singer and composer began immersing herself in the traditional folk music of the Amami Islands, shima-atu, and in January 2009 released her first single, “Ai Tsumugi”. Her debut album Kana-Itoshikihitoyo followed later that year and she has since released four studio albums, including 2015’s Toutoganashi and One in 2019. She is known for her enka (ballads) and use of ‘kobushi’, a distinctive vocal style similar to vibrato. Kizuki has also made numerous television appearances over the years, including on MBS show Chichin Puipui in 2009, as well as performing regularly on karaoke shows.
