Biography
Milltown Brothers are a British indie rock band from Colne (Lancashire), formed in 1989. The band consists of brothers Matt Nelson (vocals, guitar) and Simon Nelson (guitar), with James Fraser (bass), Barney Williams (organ, piano, harmonica) and Nian Brindle (drums). Following the release of two singles, "Coming from the Mill" and "Which Way Should I Jump?", the band signed with A&M Records and achieved success with their debut album Slinky (1991), which reached number 27 in the UK charts. Buoyed by "Which Way Should I Jump?" (#38 in the UK), which reached #10 in the U.S. Billobard Modern Rock chart, the album delivered other hits such as "Apple Green" (#82) and "Here I Stand" (#41). The band's success continued with their second Valve (1993), featuring "Turn Off" (No. 43), "Sleepwalking" (No. 97) and a cover of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" (No. 48). After leaving their label, the band ceased activity for a decade, with the release of the 1997 compilation The Best of Milltown Brothers. Returning to Rubberband Records in 2004, Milltown Brothers released the album Rubberband, followed eleven years later by Long Road (2015) and Stockholm (2020). In 2022, the compilation of singles and demos Tongue-Tied Mesmerised is released, covering the years 1987 to 1990. In 2025, Milltown Brothers returned with their sixth studio album, Boogie Woogie, which reached number 71 in the UK charts and number 4 among independent releases.
