Biography

British indie pop and alternative dance band, Flowered Up, was formed in Camden Town, London, in October 1989 by singer Liam Maher and his lifelong friend Darren 'Des' Penney. The original lineup included John O'Brien on drums, Joe Maher on guitar, Andrew Jackson on bass, and Simon Gannon on keyboards. Flowered Up released their first two singles, "It's On" and "Phobia", on Heavenly Records in 1989 and 1990. In 1991, they signed to London Records and recorded their debut album A Life with Brian. Their most notable achievement was the 13-minute single "Weekender", which reached Number 20 on the UK Singles Chart in 1992. Despite drug problems within the band, Flowered Up disbanded in 1994. In 2007, an attempt to reform the band was unsuccessful due to Dorney's refusal. Liam Maher died from a heroin overdose in October 2009, followed by his brother Joe in November 2012. A Life with Brian was remastered and released as The Best Of Flowered Up in February 2006.
